Auto Body Workers
At Risk
Getting headaches? Feeling nausea? Trouble breathing?
Experiencing muscle aches and joint pains?
Feeling tired? No energy? Can't remember things?
These are some of the effects auto
body workers are experiencing which are connected to the hazardous
materials that they are surrounded with around the work
place.
In every collision repair shop there’s no
getting around hazardous materials such as paints,
solvents, and cleaners, along with dust from
grinding, sanding and sandblasting.
Most auto body workers are aware of these
dangers; but few understand the seriousness of prolonged exposure
and the threatening consequences. Because of this, many auto body
workers still do not adequately protect themselves.
Furthermore, prolonged or repeated exposure to
these solvents may cause permanent brain and nervous system
damage. This includes memory loss, impairment of
coordination and reaction time. Exposure to these chemicals has
also been linked to brain disease, as well as liver and
kidney damage, and when inhaled in concentrated form, the
vapors from these solvents are potentially fatal. Some chemicals
such as some Isocyanates, which is odorless, are known to cause
cancer.
Cartridge respirators may not be enough!
Have they been fit tested? In many states it is required to be fit
tested once per year. When have the cartridges been changed last?
Talking to many people we have found that they are not changed soon
or often enough. How safe are they – what are you not being
protected from?
A Simple
Solution
One of the most effective, economical
protections available, recognized by NIOSH and OSHA, is a Positive
Air Respirator (PAR). A PAR consistently provides fresh, breathable
air, which is much better than merely breathing filtered air.
